Megabangna is entering a new chapter with a THB6 billion (EUR158 million) expansion that will further transform one of Bangkok’s fastest-growing districts into a larger retail, lifestyle and community destination.

The investment, announced by Ikano Centres and Central Pattana, forms part of Megabangna’s long-term THB70 billion mixed-use masterplan, reinforcing confidence in Thailand’s economic growth while supporting the rapid urban development of Eastern Bangkok.

Scheduled for completion by Q3 2028, the latest expansion will add approximately 170,000 square metres of gross building area (GBA), including new retail spaces and 1,750 additional parking bays, bringing Megabangna’s total developed area to around 800,000 square metres.

Building on 14 Years of Growth

Megabangna Expansion

Since opening in 2012, Megabangna has grown into one of Thailand’s leading shopping and lifestyle destinations.

The development has welcomed more than 670 million visitors, including a record 60 million visits in 2025, while maintaining 100% occupancy. Home to Thailand’s first IKEA store, the destination now features over 900 retail brands and has become part of everyday life for families across Bangkok.

According to Ikano Centres Managing Director Adrian Mirea, the original vision was never just about building another shopping centre. Instead, the goal was to create a place where people could meet, spend quality time together and become part of a thriving community.

A Bigger Vision Beyond Retail

The new investment represents the halfway point of Megabangna’s long-term masterplan, which spans more than 128 acres and will eventually deliver over 1.3 million square metres of integrated development.

Future phases are expected to introduce offices, hospitality, residential developments and other complementary components that will create a fully integrated mixed-use destination known as Megacity.

Central Pattana said the project reflects its vision of creating a future-ready ecosystem where business, lifestyle and community development work together to improve urban living.

Nature and Community Take Centre Stage

Rather than focusing solely on retail expansion, the next phase places greater emphasis on wellbeing, green spaces and shared experiences.

One of the key additions is MEGA SKYLINE, a three-acre outdoor destination featuring more than 3,000 square metres dedicated to recreation, wellness and active lifestyles. Inspired by Nordic design principles, the area is designed to encourage movement, relaxation and stronger community connections.

The project will also introduce MEGA LOFT, a 2,000-square-metre social dining destination that brings together restaurants and communal spaces designed for families and friends to gather.

Together, these new attractions reinforce Megabangna’s vision of becoming “A Destination for a More Thoughtful Everyday.”

Responding to Changing Consumer Lifestyles

The expansion reflects changing expectations among modern consumers, particularly families seeking more than traditional shopping experiences.

Wellness, outdoor spaces, quality family time and lifestyle experiences have become increasingly important factors influencing where people choose to spend their leisure time. Megabangna aims to respond by combining shopping, dining, entertainment and community spaces within a single destination.

Once completed, the centre will house more than 1,200 brands, including over 250 retailers making their Eastern Bangkok debut, alongside more than 20 accessible luxury brands.

Eastern Bangkok Continues to Rise

Megabangna Expansion

Bangna has become one of Bangkok’s fastest-growing districts, supported by strong infrastructure development, rising household incomes and its strategic location near Suvarnabhumi Airport and the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).

Today, the district is home to more than three million residents and records one of the highest household incomes in Greater Bangkok outside the central business district.

These factors continue to attract major investments that support long-term economic growth while strengthening Bangkok’s position as a regional commercial hub.

Why This Matters

Large-scale mixed-use developments are reshaping cities across Asia by creating destinations that combine commerce, public spaces, housing and lifestyle experiences within connected communities.

Megabangna’s expansion reflects this growing trend, demonstrating how integrated developments can support economic activity while creating more liveable urban environments. As Eastern Bangkok continues to expand, projects like Megabangna are expected to play an increasingly important role in attracting investment, supporting local businesses and enhancing everyday life for residents.
