Carlsberg Malaysia is shining a spotlight on the people behind Sabah and Sarawak’s harvest celebrations with the launch of People Behind The Rhythm, a three-part film series that explores the stories, traditions and creative talents behind its Rhythm of Harvest campaign.
Building on last year’s collaboration with local artists, the latest initiative shifts the focus from the final performance to the individuals who helped bring it to life. Through music, dance and storytelling, the campaign celebrates the rich cultural heritage of East Malaysia while highlighting the importance of preserving traditions for future generations.
Rather than simply showcasing the harvest festival, People Behind The Rhythm gives local creatives the opportunity to tell their own stories.
Directed by award-winning Sarawakian filmmaker Sarah Lois, the film trilogy follows musicians, dancers and cultural practitioners whose personal experiences inspired the Rhythm of Harvest project. The series reflects Carlsberg Malaysia’s “By Locals, For Locals” approach, ensuring the stories remain authentic and deeply connected to the communities they represent.
Managing Director Stefano Clini said the campaign was designed to celebrate Sabah and Sarawak in a way that genuinely reflects the people, traditions and cultures of the two states.
The films explore how cultural traditions continue to evolve while remaining rooted in community identity.
Lyricist Melina William shares how music helps people stay connected to their roots, even when living far from home. She believes songs have the power to preserve memories and remind people of where they come from.
Meanwhile, choreographer Arthur Darren explains how traditional dance can be presented in ways that resonate with younger generations without losing its cultural significance. By blending heritage with contemporary creativity, the performances encourage greater appreciation of Sabah and Sarawak’s rich artistic traditions.
The Rhythm of Harvest campaign continues to showcase visual elements inspired by East Malaysia, including traditional costumes, local musical influences and symbols such as the hornbill, Mount Kinabalu and the Rafflesia flower.
The project also builds on Carlsberg’s earlier collaboration with Sabahan artist Nelson Lip and Sarawakian artist T. Bagak, whose limited-edition rice-inspired packaging designs celebrated harvest as a symbol of life, gratitude and community.
Together, these creative collaborations reflect the shared traditions that continue to bring communities together during the annual harvest celebrations.
As younger generations become increasingly connected through digital platforms, storytelling has become an important way of preserving cultural identity.
By documenting the voices behind the performances, People Behind The Rhythm goes beyond entertainment to create a lasting record of the traditions, values and creative expressions that define Sabah and Sarawak’s harvest festivals.
The initiative also highlights how collaborations between brands, artists and local communities can contribute to greater appreciation of Malaysia’s diverse cultural heritage while supporting homegrown creative talent.
Cultural heritage is one of Southeast Asia’s greatest strengths, and preserving it requires more than annual celebrations. It requires opportunities for communities to share their stories in their own voices.
Campaigns like People Behind The Rhythm demonstrate how creative collaborations can help keep traditions relevant for younger audiences while supporting local filmmakers, musicians, dancers and artists. As Malaysia continues to celebrate its cultural diversity, initiatives that place local communities at the centre of the story play an important role in ensuring these traditions continue to thrive.
Across Asia, communities are finding new ways to preserve culture while embracing creativity and innovation. RiseAsia shares stories that highlight heritage, community development, entrepreneurship and the people driving positive change across the region.
